Physical Therapy Modalities

Physical Therapy equipment commonly produces electrical currents for physiological effects which include: increase in localized blood flow which can improve healing, stimulation of local nerve cells that can have a pain reducing/anaesthetic effect due to potentially blocking the transmission of the pain signals, and a degree of muscle stimulation as muscle contraction for strength.

Examples include Interferential, and Russian Stimulation. Ultrasound has been shown to cause increases in tissue relaxation, local blood flow, and scar tissue breakdown by waves that are generated by a piezoelectric effect.
